Unspoilt historic
coastal beauty
The most
beautiful cities of Adriatic coast 5 countries: Italy,
Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia
THE MS ARION
With the introduction of the MS ARION in May 2000, Arcalia
Shipping Company (Lisbon, Portugal) added another beautiful
ship to its renowned fleet. The 6000 gross tons Arion was
extensively refurbished to offer its 320 passengers an
intimate atmosphere on cruises carefully planned to provide a
tasting experience to the most discerning travellers, its size
making her particularly suited to cruise to the more areas
visiting unspoiled, little crowded ports, rarely seen from
today’s mega liners.
Arion was constructed in 1965 at Pula, in Croatia, as “Istra”
and became very popular and was converted to full time
cruising at Trieste in 1969. Purchased by Arcalia Shipping,
the ship was completely reconstructed in Lisbon. Her interiors
were designed and decorated to create a subtle atmosphere of
light blending into soft colours through its new public rooms
and passengers cabins, 92 per of which are exterior.
As regards the Arion hotel services, your private dinning room
steward serves in relaxed and unhurried environment, whilst
you look through picture windows. Traditional English
breakfast is served in the dinning room or, weather
permitting, in our Lido lounge, where during lunch you can
savour some fresh pasta, light salads, international cuisine
or healthy choice that reflects the modern taste… Don’t forget
our afternoon tea, delicious finger sandwiches and warm scones
with devon-clotted cream and jam and a wide selection of teas…
Dinner is a culinary experience with a balanced menu to please
even the most difficult diets. Menus are established by our
Master Chefs who are members of the most famous culinary
associations like “Les Toques Blanches internationales”. After
dinning retire to one of the lounge and enjoy a drink or an
espresso coffee before going to the show.
The Arion has Portuguese and other European officers and
international crew. Her size and characteristics makes her
well appointed to operate destination cruises to unusual
places away from the main cruising areas.
Memorable moments will be spent on deck, watching the sunrise
and sunset with a gentle sea breeze, lying beneath the sun or
taking a stroll. Arion has a water swimming pool, sun decks,
promenade lounges, including a winter garden for relaxing
moments, cocktail bar with a late night coco, intimate piano
bar and evening entertainment in our main lounge musicians,
dancers and singers. Do you want to get away from it all?
Arion cabins are equipped with TVs and films are shown every
day, with enough options to please every guest…
Why sailing in Croatia? You will enjoy this new destination in
Mediterranean area. You will have in each port of call enough
time to walk in the historical cities of the coast as
Dubrovnik, Split or Zadar. You will discover the fantastic and
pregnant landscape of Kotor Fjord entering to Montenegro. At
each time, the ship will have a berth in front of the wall of
old cities where a large program of tours even inside the
country is available.

Itinerary
Sunday: KOPER (Slovenia)
Very near from Trieste in Italy is located the small
renaissance city of Koper which is today the most important
port of Slovenia. Embarkation.
Monday: PULA (Croatia)
The most stunning towns of the Istra region which also occupy
the very top of Croatian and European cultural heritage are
situated on the west shore of Istrian peninsula: Pula – with
its famed Ancient sites such as the impressive Roman
amphitheatre, the Temple of Augustus, the Golden Gate (Porta
aurea), the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii…
Tuesday: ZADAR (Croatia)
Once a dominant city on the Adriatic coast and rival of
Venice, Zadar is nowadays a “city-treasury”, preserving in its
historical core the remains of the Roman Forum, the Church of
St. Donat, the Romanesque Cathedral of St Anastasia, the
Church of St. Mary, the Benedictine Convent and a permanent
collection of church art known as “The Gold and Silver of
Zadar”. Numerous and rich cultural and artistic programs are
also organised. They include the traditional Music Evenings in
St. Donat, New Theatre Performances, Zadar Theatre Summer, as
well as various visual arts exhibitions. The city celebrates
the holiday of St. Kresevan, which is, as the same time, the
day of Zadar (24th of November).
Wednesday: SPLIT (morning) Croatia
Split, the second largest city in Croatia and “the capital of
Dalmatia” had gradually developed around the palace of the
Roman emperor Diocletian, built more than 1700 years ago. From
Diocletian’s cellars, Cathedral of the Temple of Jupiter to
the Golden Gate (Porta aurea), across the Peristyle and the
Market (Pjaca) to the sunny sea promenade (Riva) and further
up the Marmont street, past the fish-market and all the way to
the Theatre: morning in Split brings you atmosphere of a
typical Mediterranean city.
Wednesday: KORCULA (afternoon) Croatia
A historical town of Korcula is known as the birthplace of
famous Marco Polo. The town will fascinate you with the
beautiful historical core, narrow stone streets, museums and
churches. Korcula is the town of a long-cherished cultural
heritage and one of the most visited destinations on the
Adriatic coast. It is famous for the unique and exciting
traditional dances “Moreska” and “Kumpanija”.
Thursday: DUBROVNIK (Croatia)
City-monument, the most beautiful and the most famous Croatian
city. Once a famous Dubrovnik Republic, the city was a
powerful rival of Venice in the fight over sea rule. Today it
still continues to rival Venice with its beauty and charming
atmosphere. It would be really hard to single out the most
fascinating piece of architecture. The Franciscan and the
Dominican Monastery, The Cathedral, the Rector’s Palace,
Stradun, grand City walls and St. Baize’s Church, each of
these impressive buildings deserves attention and admiration.
Friday: KOTOR (Montenegro)
Early morning entering to Montenegro you will discover by
sailing the magnificence of Kotor Fjord which is the only
fjord in Mediterranean see, the stunning “Boka Kotorska”.
Despite all misfortunes, Kotor has preserved the atmosphere of
the medieval Mediterranean town. The town is encircled with 20
m high walls that are 2-15 m thick and 4.5 km long. One stem
of the wall begins at the harbour, i.e. at the South gate, and
the other at the River Skurda – West Gate. They both end at
the fort of Saint Ivan. The Fort rises above the town and
reaches the height of over 250m. There are 1426 stairs leading
to the Tower.
